Will their favourite cup sit comfortably on it?
Check the usable area against the base of their mugs and glasses. A decorative rim can make a coaster's working surface smaller than its outside diameter. The drink should sit level rather than balance on a raised edge.
For someone who enjoys entertaining, count how many people usually have a drink at once. Four may suit a small household; a larger set can be more useful for guests. Check the pack you are buying, including whether a holder comes with it.
Different surfaces do different jobs
Look beyond the pattern to the material and underside. Some coasters absorb condensation, while others keep it on the surface until it is wiped away. A smooth or backed underside can be useful, but read the maker's guidance for the recipient's furniture rather than assuming every coaster prevents marks.
