Start with the lens, then choose the effect
Filters are an appealing gift when you know what the photographer wants to try. A circular polariser can reduce reflections from surfaces such as water or glass; neutral-density filters reduce the light reaching the camera so they can explore longer exposures in brighter conditions. These are different tools, so check the contents rather than buying by piece count.
The fitting is the first check
Match the lens’s filter-thread diameter, usually marked with the diameter symbol, rather than assuming a camera brand or focal length tells you the size. Some lenses and filter systems need a different mounting arrangement. If they use magnetic filters, confirm the set and adapter belong to a compatible system.
A larger filter with a suitable step-up ring may serve several lenses, but it can affect hood use and adds another part to handle. It is better to ask than to give a beautifully presented set that cannot attach.
Buy for the photographs they want to make
Look for clear information about coatings, glass and filter strength. A compact useful selection can be more thoughtful than a large set of novelty effects. Check whether they already own the same filters, and include a protective wallet if one is not supplied.
For long exposures, a camera tripod and compatible remote shutter may solve the practical problem before another filter does.
