Start with the products they reach for, not the number of doors. A person who enjoys trying new make-up may appreciate different colours; someone loyal to a few familiar products may get more from a bath and body selection. Read the actual contents list to see which sort of calendar you are buying.

Fragrance preferences matter too. A selection built around one scent can be lovely if it is a favourite, but a month of it is less appealing if you have guessed. For skin and hair products, consider their established choices and the supplied ingredient information, without assuming a mixed box can replace their normal routine.

How much is in each surprise?

Calendar contents range from small samples to full-size products, with brushes and other accessories sometimes included in the count. A door count is not a product-size guide. Look at the stated quantities of the things they are most likely to use.

• Mini products can suit someone who enjoys experimenting with shades or scents.

• Larger sizes are more useful when the selection includes favourites they already know.

• Tools and accessories earn their place when they supply something useful, rather than repeat what is in the bathroom drawer.

Make-up shades are worth checking individually. A large palette of colours outside their tastes is not automatically a better present than a small selection they will wear. Avoid letting a claimed saving make that decision for you.

Give it while there is a countdown to enjoy

Check whether the calendar runs for 12, 24 or 25 days, and arrange to give it before the first intended compartment. Leave products sealed with the original directions and ingredient information; miniature containers may rely on the outer packaging for some details.
