Would a reading subscription earn its place?
Kindle Unlimited can be useful if you read often and like exploring beyond a fixed wishlist. It is a borrowing subscription for eligible Kindle titles, not a promise that every ebook you want is included.
You can borrow up to 20 eligible titles at a time and return some to make room for others. The selection changes, and some titles include audiobook access. Check the listing for each book rather than assuming every ebook has a listening version.
You do not need to buy a Kindle
The free Kindle app lets you read on compatible phones, tablets and computers as well as Kindle devices. Trying the app on a screen you already own can help you decide whether digital reading suits you before buying an e-reader.
For someone who loves paper books, an ebook subscription may be a poor substitute. For a keen digital reader, check the screen size, reading comfort and catalogue before choosing a device or membership.

Kindle Unlimited is separate from Prime Reading
Prime Reading offers a smaller changing selection as part of Amazon Prime. Kindle Unlimited is a separately paid service. Having Prime does not automatically give you Kindle Unlimited, and neither makes the whole Kindle store free.
If you already have Prime, look at its included reading choices first. You may find enough there without paying for another subscription.
Buying it for somebody else?
Treat the UK Amazon signup offer on this page as a subscription for yourself. It joins the Amazon account used at signup; do not take out a personal membership expecting to transfer it to a recipient.
For a reader’s present, a chosen book, reading accessory or genuine audiobook gift can be easier to give. Ask what format they enjoy before choosing.
What happens when you cancel?
A personal subscription renews monthly unless cancelled. Borrowed Kindle Unlimited titles are not purchases to keep: access ends when your paid membership period ends. Books bought separately remain separate from those loans.
Use a trial to check the books and app you will really use. If the catalogue misses most of your reading list, buying selected ebooks or borrowing through your library may fit better.
