Start with the kind of weaving they want to try
A rectangular frame loom holds the lengthwise warp threads while the maker passes weft yarn over and under them. Look for a tapestry or frame-weaving kit if that is the experience you want to give. Knitting looms, rubber-band bracelet sets and potholder loop kits use different methods, even when they appear in the same search.
Choose a first project they would enjoy keeping, such as a small wall hanging. The usable weaving width matters more than the outside frame dimensions. A compact frame is a sensible introduction to small pieces, but should not be bought on the assumption that it will make a full-size scarf or blanket.
Check what gets them from an empty frame to a finished piece
Read the contents for warp thread as well as the more decorative weft yarn. A frame, shuttle or weaving needle, comb and enough yarn for the demonstrated project make a more complete starting point than the loom alone. Photographed yarn and finished samples are not always included.
Instructions should explain setting up the warp, keeping the edges even and removing the work from the frame. Check whether assembly is needed and whether the recipient can follow the supplied print or video guidance. A useful kit leaves them able to repeat the process with their own yarn, rather than needing to guess how the first piece was started.
