Vinyl Record Storage Rack: A place to browse the records they love

A record rack keeps a vinyl collection together and within reach. Choose one that supports their sleeved records upright, fits the space and leaves enough room to browse without squeezing the covers.

Choose for the collection they have

A rack can be a useful gift for a vinyl listener whose favorite records need a home near the player. Start with the records themselves: how many do they want to keep here, what size are the sleeves, and do they use thicker outer covers or box sets?

A compact rack may suit a small collection or a rotating selection of favorites. A larger collection may need shelving instead. Check that the rack solves a storage need without taking over a room they've already arranged.

Look past the advertised record count

  • Sleeve fit: compare usable internal dimensions with their records in their protective covers.

  • Support: look for a base and sides or dividers that keep records upright and supported.

  • Capacity: allow space to take an album out and put it back; thick gatefold sleeves and box sets change how many fit.

  • Load and stability: check the maker's weight limits and assembly instructions, including any fixing it requires.

Store records upright in their sleeves rather than in a pile. A large, partly empty rack also needs suitable dividers or support so the remaining records don't slump across the gap.

Give the rack a sensible home

Measure the whole rack, including projecting feet or handles, and the space needed to browse from above or the front. Keep the collection away from direct sunlight, heat and damp; a convenient space beside a radiator isn't a good storage spot.

An open rack makes records accessible, but it doesn't provide the enclosure of a cabinet. Keep their sleeves in use, and choose the finish around their listening space rather than assuming every collector wants a vintage look.

For Christmas or a birthday, give the rack without filling it with albums chosen at random. If they're still choosing their playback equipment, our record player guide covers that separate purchase.

If storage is already sorted, a vinyl record album from their wish list offers a different gift. Check the edition and collection rather than filling spare rack space with music chosen at random.
