Sleeping Bag: Help them settle in after the campfire
A sleeping bag makes a thoughtful equipment gift when its warmth, shape and packed size suit the camper’s actual trips.

The night temperature matters more than the season label
A sleeping bag is the part of camp that follows someone into bed. The best gift starts with the nights they expect: warm summer weekends, cooler shoulder-season trips or something more demanding. “Three-season” means different things across listings, so it’s worth asking what they already use and what feels missing.
Look for a stated comfort temperature and how it was tested. A comfort rating describes a different threshold from a lower limit or an extreme survival figure. Don’t buy around the coldest number printed in the title, and don’t promise a warm night from the bag alone: clothing, shelter, ground insulation and the sleeper all matter.
Room to turn, or less to carry?
A rectangular bag gives more room to move and may unzip as a blanket. A tapered mummy bag reduces unused space and often has a hood, but a close fit won’t appeal to every sleeper. Compare the usable length and shoulder width rather than assuming that an adult label settles sizing.
For someone carrying camp on their back, total weight and compressed size can decide whether a bag gets used. On a car-camping trip, a roomier, bulkier design may be welcome. Synthetic insulation and down also differ in packed volume, drying and care requirements; follow the maker’s instructions for the particular fill.
Make it easy to keep and use
A stuff sack helps on the journey, while long-term storage may call for a larger breathable bag. Confirm what’s supplied and whether there’s space to dry and store it at home. Zipper direction can matter if the recipient wants to join compatible bags; that feature needs an explicit match, not a similar-looking zip.
A sleeping bag works well for Christmas or a birthday when the camper has helped choose it. Keep the receipt and leave time for a fit check before their first trip. It’s a personal comfort choice, so a short agreed shortlist is often a better surprise than guessing their preferred warmth and shape.
If the sleeping kit is already settled, a camping tent solves the separate shelter decision. A bag also needs an insulating sleeping surface; it doesn’t replace a camping mat.
Alternatives to consider

Camping Tent
A complete shelter when their sleeping equipment is already sorted.

Camping Hammock
A suspended resting setup for someone with suitable supports and a preference for a hammock.
