Plant Grow Light: Help a favorite plant find its light

A plant grow light can supplement a houseplant’s available daylight. Choose a lamp for the plant and the space it occupies, with a mounting arrangement and daily schedule that work in the recipient’s home.

Which plant needs the extra light?

Start with the recipient’s actual plant and where it lives. A small foliage plant on a shelf and a tall plant beside a window need different coverage and mounting space. The RHS guide to artificial lighting explains why light intensity and duration need to suit the plants being grown. A grow light is a useful tool, not a promise that every plant will thrive in any corner.

Ask whether extra light is wanted before buying. The lamp will be visible in the room, and the recipient may have a preference for white light rather than a strongly colored glow.

Fit the lamp to its place

A clip-on light needs a suitable edge and a secure grip. A freestanding lamp needs room for its base; a shelf light needs a suitable fixing point. Check the adjustment range and power-cord length so the light can reach the intended position without a precarious arrangement.

For a bulb-only purchase, confirm the required fitting and a compatible fixture. Some small lamps use USB power, so check whether the appropriate adapter is included. Larger grow-tent equipment is a different purchase from a compact houseplant light.

Read coverage before the biggest number

Look for the maker’s recommended distance and the area illuminated at that distance. A large wattage-equivalent claim is not the same as actual power consumption, and “full spectrum” alone does not establish useful coverage for a particular plant.

Choose a timer or control that the recipient can set easily, with a schedule suited to the plant and its existing daylight. Check whether the timer repeats automatically and what happens after power is interrupted. Follow the lamp’s clearance and installation instructions, keeping electrical parts protected from watering.

A present with a place already in mind

For Christmas, a light may help someone experimenting with their indoor growing setup during shorter days. For a birthday, the best clue is a plant they have already said needs a brighter position. Check the complete cost of the lamp, fixture or adapter and ongoing electricity use. If the real need is watering or pruning equipment, a Houseplant Care Set serves that different job.
