Piano Bench: A place to sit down and play
A piano bench can improve a familiar playing space without replacing the instrument. Find the right height, seat size and fit before choosing its finish.

Begin with the seat they use now
A bench makes a useful gift when a pianist is borrowing a dining chair, sharing a seat that never feels right or asking for a dedicated place to play. Ask what they would change about the current arrangement. A handsome finish will not rescue the wrong height.
Measure the existing keyboard height and the player’s preferred seat, ideally with their teacher’s input. Consider the cushion when comparing measurements: the listed overall height and the height under the player’s weight may differ.
Fixed height or adjustable?
A fixed-height wooden bench can be simple and solid when its dimensions already suit the player. An adjustable model is more flexible for a shared instrument, but the actual height range and adjustment method matter. Folding keyboard stools are another format; compare their usable settings and stability rather than assuming they work for everyone.
Seat width and depth: enough room to sit and move comfortably without crowding the instrument.
Load rating: follow the maker’s stated limit for the exact model.
Adjustment and assembly: controls should be reachable, and the assembled bench should sit securely on the floor.
Think about the whole playing position
Allow space to reach the pedals and move between the bench and instrument. If the keyboard sits on a portable keyboard stand, check the two heights together and leave knee room. A bench cannot compensate for an unsuitable stand arrangement.
A duet bench offers a wider seat, but its name alone does not establish space or a load rating for two people. For a child, involve their teacher or caregiver in the seating decision rather than guessing from an age label.
Choose useful extras after the fit
A storage compartment can hold music if its internal dimensions suit the books. It is not a reason to accept an uncomfortable seat, and any lid needs the handling described in the instructions. Upholstery, cleaning and assembly requirements deserve a look too.
For Christmas or a birthday, choose a finish that belongs beside their digital piano keyboard or acoustic piano. Keep the measurements and receipt with the gift: this is furniture they will use, not just admire.
