A small change to the light, a different picture
A reflector redirects available light toward a subject. Beside a window, it can lift the shadowed side of a face or bring detail back into a small still life. It is an inviting gift for someone who enjoys noticing how light changes a photograph.
Choose the size they will actually use
A smaller disc is easier to carry for close-ups; a larger one covers more of a portrait but catches more wind outdoors. Compare the open size and the folded size before buying. The storage pouch matters when it needs to fit into their existing bag.
Many multi-surface designs combine white, silver, gold and black covers around a translucent diffuser. Those surfaces do different jobs: white gives a gentler bounce, silver a stronger one, black reduces reflected light and the diffuser softens light passing through it. Gold adds warmth, which they may or may not want.
Who is going to hold it?
An assistant can hold a disc during portraits. For solo work, check whether the kit includes a suitable clamp or stand, or whether they already own one. A reflector does not create light in a dark room; a portable LED photo light is the more useful choice when they need an independent light source.
