Navigation Compass: A practical tool for map-reading skills
A navigation compass can be a thoughtful gift for a hiker who uses maps or wants to learn. Choose a readable instrument that fits their map work, with time to practice before relying on it outdoors.

A useful gift includes the learning
A compass indicates direction; it does not tell the user where they are or choose a safe route. Someone new to map navigation benefits from instruction and practice in familiar surroundings. An experienced hiker may already have strong preferences, so ask which feature their current compass lacks before buying a replacement.
A clear baseplate is useful for working directly on a paper map. Rotating housings, orienting lines and a direction-of-travel arrow help with map-and-compass techniques. A sighting design serves a different preference; decorative pocket compasses and novelty survival bundles should not be assumed to do the same job.
Readability and map compatibility come first
Check that the needle, bezel markings and reference lines are easy for the recipient to read. Compare the map scales printed on the baseplate with the maps they actually use. A long feature list is less useful than clear markings and an instrument they can handle confidently.
Magnetic north is not the same as every north reference on a map. The USGS explanation of map north arrows distinguishes magnetic, true and grid north and notes that magnetic variation changes with place and time. Check whether the compass offers adjustable declination or requires the user to account for it separately; neither removes the need to learn the correct method.
Check the destination and supplied extras
If the recipient travels between regions of the world, confirm the maker’s stated operating region or needle-balancing system. Do not infer worldwide suitability from the word expedition. Check whether a lanyard or protective case is supplied, and whether their preferred maps or instruction are separate purchases.
For Christmas or a birthday, agree the format with the hiker and pair the purchase with an opportunity to learn if needed. It is navigation equipment that needs skill and current information, rather than a guarantee against getting lost.
