Start with the letters they like to write
A short thank-you note needs a different amount of space from a long letter. Small illustrated sheets can make a lovely everyday set; larger pages are easier for someone who writes several paragraphs. Choose lined paper if that helps them keep a comfortable rhythm, or a clear blank area if they prefer their own layout.
Read the contents, not just the piece count
Compare the number of usable writing sheets with the number of matching envelopes.
Look at paper size and weight, and whether printing covers one side or both.
Check that the folded paper fits the supplied envelope without awkward extra folds.
A box described as a 70-piece set might include stickers and seals in that total. Those can be enjoyable extras, but they do not replace the paper and envelopes. A writing pen, ink and postage are separate unless the contents say otherwise.
Make a paper anniversary gift personal
For a first wedding anniversary, the connection is already in the paper. You could write a letter on one sheet and leave the rest for the recipient, or give the set untouched if they would enjoy choosing its first use. There is no need to print names or a wedding date on every page.
If the gift is really about keeping photographs, a photo album may be a better starting point. For everyday private notes instead of correspondence, compare a journal.
Paper feel matters more than a fancy finish
Some papers feather or show ink through the back, especially with wet-writing pens. Read the paper information and product photographs rather than assuming a thick-looking box contains thick paper. Strong fragrance, heavy glitter or very dark printing can also make a pretty set less pleasant to write on.
