Journaling Stencil Set: Small templates for pages made their way

Reusable journal stencils help someone draw boxes, headings, shapes and simple trackers on paper. Pick templates that fit their notebook and leave room for the way they actually use it.

For the person who enjoys making the page

A stencil set gives a paper-journal fan repeatable shapes without asking them to draw every line freehand. It is most appealing when arranging the page is part of the pleasure: a weekly layout, a small reading tracker or a few decorative details.

It is a modest companion to a journal they already like. A set of plastic templates does not usually include the notebook, pens or a complete planning system. Someone who prefers ready-printed pages may find another stack of templates less useful.

Fit matters more than the number of shapes

Compare the actual template size with their page. Some sheets fit inside a compact notebook; others are comfortable on a desk but awkward to carry. A5-style descriptions are a starting point, not a promise that every opening suits every A5 page.

  • Look for shapes they will use: boxes and lines for layouts, small symbols for headings, or decorative outlines.

  • Consider the pen tip. It needs to reach the edge of the opening without forcing the stencil upward.

  • Translucent plastic helps position shapes over existing notes or dots; thin sheets can bend or shift while tracing.

The stencil makes the outline; the recipient still chooses the layout, wording and colors. Very tiny openings can be fiddly, and thick or wet pens may leave less tidy edges. A simple set with useful spacing can earn more use than a huge assortment.

Choose the companion, not a whole new routine

If the notebook itself is part of the gift, a leather journal is worth comparing for its page layout and paper, not just the cover. A reading journal already has its own prompts and may leave less room for custom layouts.

Stencils are different from a calligraphy set, which is about forming letters with suitable tools, and a book annotation kit, which helps mark and revisit a text. For Christmas or a birthday, follow the recipient’s existing paper habit rather than trying to organize their life for them.
