Guitar Capo: A small clamp that opens up familiar chords

A capo raises the pitch of the strings so a guitarist can use familiar chord shapes in a different key. Match it to their guitar and choose a mechanism they'll find comfortable to use.

What does a capo do?

A capo clamps across the strings partway along the guitar neck, raising their pitch. It lets a player keep familiar chord shapes while changing key, which can be useful when following a song or finding a comfortable singing range.

It's a small, practical gift for a guitarist who wants one, or a useful spare of a model they already like. Check first: some players have a firm preference for how a capo feels and closes.

Get the fit right

  • Instrument type: choose for their steel-string acoustic, electric, classical nylon-string or 12-string guitar, as the maker specifies.

  • Width and curve: the padded bar needs to reach across the strings and suit the fretboard's curve. A classical guitar often needs a wider, flatter model.

  • Pressure: adjustable models let the player change the clamping force. Too much can pull notes sharp; too little can leave strings buzzing.

A label saying 'guitar capo' doesn't settle all of those questions. Their guitar model is a useful starting point for checking the capo maker's compatibility information.

Choose the mechanism they'll enjoy using

A spring clamp can be quick to put on and move, but check that the recipient is comfortable squeezing it. Other designs use a lever, screw or adjustable mechanism; compare the instructions and their existing preference rather than assuming one style suits everyone.

Look for smooth edges, intact padding and a compact shape that won't get in the way of their fretting hand. Finish color is a nice extra after the fit is right. A bundle of picks doesn't make an unsuitable capo a better choice.

The player may need to check tuning after fitting or moving it. A capo changes the key; it doesn't tune the guitar. If that is the gap in their kit, a clip-on tuner serves a different purpose.

For Christmas or a birthday, keep the packaging and compatibility details with it. A well-matched capo can be more useful than a large accessory bundle chosen without knowing the guitar.
