The discs tell you more than the name

A food processor can take over repetitive preparation: chopping ingredients, shredding vegetables or making slices for a large meal. Start with those tasks. A small chopper with one blade may be excellent for a sauce, but it doesn't automatically provide a feed tube and slicing discs.

Read the supplied attachments rather than relying on a photograph of every optional accessory. Which thicknesses can it slice? Is a shredding disc included? Does the maker permit the dough, nuts or other ingredients the recipient wants to prepare? A long list of functions is useful only when the right tools are in the box.

Match working capacity to an ordinary meal

The bowl's advertised volume can be larger than its usable capacity for liquids or dough. Compare the relevant limits and the smallest amount it can process as well as the biggest batch. A large bowl that struggles with a small dressing may not suit a household cooking for one or two.

Leave room above the appliance. The lid, feed tube and pusher need to clear cabinets, and the bowl needs space to lift away. Weight also matters if it will come out of a cupboard for every use.

Mixing and processing are different gifts

A stand mixer mainly works through mixing attachments in an open bowl; a processor uses blades and discs for preparation. Some machines overlap, but their included equipment and allowed recipes decide how far. Ask which job is missing from their kitchen before replacing a machine they already like.

For someone who enjoys careful hand preparation, a comfortable chef's knife may be more welcome than another appliance. A processor earns its space when the volume and repetition of the work make it useful.

Plan for everything that needs washing

A removable blade, lid, feed tube and bowl each need cleaning and safe storage. Look for accessible crevices, clear dishwasher instructions and a safe place for sharp discs. Feed food with the supplied pusher, and follow the maker's assembly and blade-handling directions.

Choose around a useful first recipe, not a promise that it will do every kitchen job. A well-matched everyday processor can be a better gift than a larger box of attachments they never unpack.
