Dry Bag: Keep the spare layers in their own protected space

A dry bag can separate clothing or small pieces of kit from wet surroundings. Choose its capacity, fabric and closure for the way the recipient packs, with a clear understanding of its water-protection limits.

Inside a pack or carried on its own?

Lightweight dry sacks can organize spare layers inside another bag without adding much bulk. A tougher roll-top bag may suit external carrying or rougher handling, but its material and intended use still need checking. A shoulder strap does not automatically make a dry bag as comfortable as a hiking backpack over a long distance.

For a camper, the useful size might hold sleepwear and spare clothing. A hiker may want a smaller internal compartment for items that need to stay separate. Start with the contents rather than buying the largest volume available.

Leave enough room to close it properly

Compare the stated capacity and dimensions with the manufacturer’s usable, closed size. A roll-top needs space for the specified folds before its buckle is joined; overfilling can compromise the closure. Check the seams and buckle, and follow the instructions for that bag rather than assuming every closure uses the same number of rolls.

Do not read “waterproof” as an unlimited immersion guarantee. Splash protection, rain resistance and submersion are different demands. Sea to Summit’s guidance on protecting electronics explains why water can enter a roll-top closure and why the intended use matters. Valuable electronics need protection specifically suited to the expected exposure.

A useful gift is a size they will reach for

For a Christmas or birthday present, ask which clothing or equipment needs its own compartment and whether the bag will live inside an existing pack. A small set can help divide items, but multipack piece counts should not replace checking each bag’s capacity and construction.

Inspect the bag before a trip, test its closure as the maker directs, and dry it thoroughly after use. A floating-looking bag is not a flotation aid, and a supplied phone pouch should be checked separately rather than treated as proof of the main bag’s protection.
