Doorstop: A small solution for the door that keeps drifting shut

A portable doorstop can be a practical little home gift. Choose between a wedge and a weighted design around the door, floor and place where it will sit.

Solve a real door problem

A doorstop is most welcome when there is a door the recipient actually wants to hold open. A simple wedge grips beneath the door; a weighted fabric, rope or metal design sits against it. Decorative versions can add character, but their first job is to stay put.

Measure the gap under the door and consider its weight, the floor finish and the direction in which it moves. A wedge that suits a narrow gap may be useless beneath a higher door. A weighted block needs enough resistance without becoming awkward to lift.

Choose the contact points carefully

Look for a base that suits the actual flooring, and check whether hard edges or trapped grit could mark it. A carry loop can make moving a weighted stop easier. Fabric and rope need suitable cleaning directions, particularly where shoes or damp floors are nearby.

Search results may also show wall-mounted bumpers, which protect a wall from a handle, and security bars, which serve a different purpose. A wall bumper does not necessarily hold a door open. A portable stop avoids drilling, but still needs the owner’s agreement and a position outside the walking route.

Know when the door must stay free

Do not wedge a fire door open or obstruct an exit. A decorative stop is not a lock, a child-safety device or a guarantee that a heavy door cannot move. Choose it for an appropriate interior door and retain the maker’s use instructions.

For someone who enjoys decorating, match the texture and color to their room rather than choosing a novelty shape at random. A table lamp is another home accessory if the useful job they need is light rather than a door held open.
