Coffee Tasting Set: A few new coffees, without a whole bag of each

The format comes first

A tasting set is a useful gift for someone who already enjoys brewing coffee. It lets them try several coffees without committing to full bags. But beans and grounds are not interchangeable: whole beans need a suitable grinder, while preground coffee needs to suit their brewing method.

If you know the brewer they use, choose around it. A sample packed for filter coffee may not be right for an espresso setup. Coffee bags that brew in a cup are another format; check whether that is what the recipient would actually use.

What will they be comparing?

Look for a selection with clearly described differences. Origins, blends and roast styles can give them a reason to try the samples side by side. These are choices, not a quality ranking: someone who likes a familiar chocolatey cup may not want a whole set of very bright coffees.

• Check how many separate coffees are included and the weight of each sample.

• Read whether flavor descriptions refer to the coffee itself or added flavoring.

• Choose enough of each sample for their usual brewer, rather than tiny portions that are awkward to use.

Roasting and packing information can help you judge freshness. Follow the storage directions supplied, and avoid ordering so early that the gift spends weeks forgotten in a warm cupboard.

Make the tasting easy

For Christmas, a short note inviting them to choose a favorite can be enough; they do not need a formal scoring sheet. Give the samples in their original packs so the names and brewing details stay with them.

If their setup needs work before they can use whole beans, our burr grinder guide helps with that choice. For more ideas around their routine, browse Christmas gifts for coffee lovers.
