Chess Set: A board worth sitting down to

A chess set gives two players a game they can return to. Choose a clear, comfortable board and recognizable pieces, with a size and storage arrangement that suit where they'll play.

Choose for playing, not just the photograph

A chess set can be a welcome gift for someone who enjoys a game across a real board. Find out whether they want a set for the kitchen table, something to leave out at home or a compact board to take away. Those choices matter more than an ornate box.

For regular play, recognizable pieces and clear light-and-dark squares make the board easy to read. Staunton-style pieces are the familiar traditional shapes; a themed set may look appealing but can make the king, queen and bishop harder to tell apart.

  • Complete set: check for an eight-by-eight board and all 32 playing pieces, rather than a board-only or pieces-only listing.

  • Playing size: compare the open board and piece bases, leaving comfortable room to see and move each piece.

  • Storage: check the pouch, fitted spaces or folding-board compartment, including the clasp and how the pieces are protected.

  • Instructions: a clear rules leaflet is useful for someone learning; don't assume every decorative set includes one.

A wooden finish can make a pleasing gift, but plastic pieces and a practical board may suit someone who plays often or carries it around. Check stability, clean edges and the actual dimensions rather than buying by the material name alone.

At home or on the move?

A larger board needs a table with enough room for both players. A folding set can be easier to put away, though the playing surface should sit flat when open. Compare folded size and weight if they'll take it to a friend's house.

Magnetic pieces can help a travel set stay in place, but check reviews for usable size and how the pieces lift. Tiny travel boards are convenient to pack and less comfortable for a long game; a magnetic label doesn't mean the board stays playable on every journey.

If they play at a club, ask what size and style they want before choosing competition equipment. A casual gift doesn't need to meet tournament specifications, and a beautiful set isn't automatically approved for events.

Extra queens can be a useful inclusion when a pawn is promoted. More valuable still is knowing how to replace a lost piece: check the maker's spare-piece policy, and keep the set's details with the gift.

For a fifth wedding anniversary, the separate set with a wooden board can follow the traditional wood theme. Confirm that the board is real wood; pieces may be wooden, metal or acrylic and should be described separately. Choose it for someone who actually enjoys chess, rather than expecting the occasion to create an interest in learning. Other materials remain available through the general choice.

Keep the inscription out of the game

A name or short dedication can make a chess set a keepsake as well as a game. Establish whether the wording goes on the outside of the folding board, its edge or the playing surface, and consider how visible the pieces and squares will remain.

Check the custom package still includes a complete board and all the pieces. Compare its actual playing size and storage with the ordinary set before paying for engraving. Personal wording is not evidence of tournament suitability or a particular wood construction.
