When the cake is ready to share
A serving stand is a different gift from a decorating turntable. Its job is to display the finished cake and make it easy to bring to the table. It suits a baker who regularly shares cakes, or someone who enjoys arranging desserts when friends come over.
Start with the actual cake diameter, including frosting and decoration. Check the usable platform, its rim and the stability of the pedestal. A stand that looks generous in a photograph may leave a wide cake hanging over the edge.
The lid is an option, not the whole gift
A dome can help cover a cake between servings, but needs enough internal height for the decoration. It adds another large piece to store and clean. Compare glass, ceramic, wood and acrylic for weight, care and the recipient's tableware rather than assuming one is always best.
Choose a restrained style if their tastes are uncertain. Heavy or fragile stands are better suited to use at home than frequent transport. If the real need is smooth icing and piping, a decorating kit or turntable would serve a different purpose.
