Bookshelf Speakers: Give their music a proper place in the room

A pair of bookshelf speakers creates a fixed stereo listening setup. The useful choice depends on what will feed them sound, whether amplification is built in and where the two speakers can stand.

Powered or passive is the first decision

Powered speakers contain an amplifier, usually in one cabinet of the pair. They can suit a straightforward home setup when their inputs match the music source. Passive speakers need a separate suitable amplifier and speaker cable. Buying a pair alone doesn’t necessarily buy a working system.

Read the package quantity carefully: some listings price a single speaker even when the photograph shows a pair. The approximate budget here is for the pair, with extra equipment considered separately.

Trace the connection from their music

  • For a phone or computer, confirm the required Bluetooth, USB or audio connection on the exact model.

  • For a turntable, establish where the phono preamp is: in the player, amplifier or a separate box.

  • For a TV, compare its audio output with the speakers’ input; a familiar socket shape doesn’t establish support.

A phono preamp raises the turntable’s small signal to the level expected by an ordinary line input. Powered speakers don’t automatically include that stage. Likewise, Bluetooth can be an input without providing wireless connection between the two cabinets.

Two speakers need two places

Allow for the cabinet dimensions, cable route and any rear connections or ports. Separation helps create stereo sound, and the maker’s placement advice is a better starting point than pushing both speakers together into a bookcase. Stands may help, but they take more floor space and add cost.

Choose around the room and their listening habits, not just advertised wattage. A compact pair can serve a desk or small living room, while a larger cabinet may be awkward on the shelf it was bought for. Ask before replacing equipment that a keen listener already chose carefully.

If music needs to move between rooms or go outdoors, a portable Bluetooth speaker serves that different routine.

Building a vinyl setup from scratch? Read the record player guide alongside the speaker specifications so the whole connection chain is accounted for.

Adding a CD player? Match its actual audio output to the speaker system; a player’s Bluetooth input is not proof it can send CD sound wirelessly.
